Vieira announces retirement from football

July 15th, 2011 by Sport Guy

Patrick Vieira has retired from football at the age of 35 after failing to hit the heights of his Arsenal days since moving to Premier League big boys Manchester City. The French midfielder will now join the backroom staff at City in a role that will focus upon the future development of the club.

Vieira was Roberto Mancini’s first signing at the start of last year and high hopes were set for him among the City faithful upon his arrival at Eastlands. However, fitness problems and a lack of pace started to plague the former Arsenal legend, who ended up starting just a dozen matches during his time at the club. Stiff competition in midfield only served to heighten the issue, as did the emergence of Yaya Toure. With City bringing in another new batch of players this summer to help them prepare for Champions League football during 2011/2012, Vieira’s decision to quit while he still has his reputation intact is a sound one.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was among the first to congratulate the player on a stellar career, the French manager revealing that Vieira was an “exceptional” player for Arsenal and a true leader throughout the “Invincibles” era enjoyed not so long ago by the North London side. With the player amassing a wealth of experience during his time in English football, Manchester City’s chief football operations officer Brian Marwood is optimistic that the player will be able to use this experience to lead the club forward from behind the scenes.

Each soccer team has 11 players; the players can use any part of the bodies to hit the ball, except their hands or arms. They generally use their feet and heads as they kick, dribble and pass the ball toward the goal.

Soccer games mostly take 90 minutes. They have two 45- minute halves divided by a short break, or half time. Besides half time, the action stops only when a team scores, a foul is committed, or a player is injured. Referee is called to the official who makes sure that the rules are followed.
